Who Am I
I was 16 on an Inter rail trip with my elder brother to France, Germany, Yugoslavia, Switzerland and Italy; all within three weeks. We visited The Berlin Wall, the Colosseum, the Vatican, the L’Oreal Academy, just off the Champs Elysees. These all inspired me to move forward with hairdressing after nearly ending before it had begun. An initial dream was to work in the film industry as a sfx make-up artist. I’d clearly watched too many sci-fi movies.
In the 1980’s there was no film industry in the UK, so I focused on one of the essential elements I’d need for a SFX career; hairdressing. It took pole position in my career choice, superseding the initial SFX. My first full time employer, the legendary John Hardy, was strict but fair. He had taken me on after my initial two years at hairdressing school. I was now an ‘improver’! A year later I began moving up the ranks, eventually becoming a senior stylist. At this point I was one of the lead stylists for cutting and colour.
I was doing well, but something rankled me. Most of my friends had left or been to University. It was a tick that just wouldn’t go away, so I began evening courses that would allow me to start another course that would lead me to start a University degree. All the time working full time or as near as.
After I completed my degree, I was euphoric, but it was the love of my craft which stopped me from working in London at a PR firm. Today I not only work with focus, but I enjoy my new love of constant training. It keeps me inspired and fresh. It was on one of these training sessions that Mark Hayes, at Sassoon, talked about the design, structure and beauty of detail. It was from that session that a phrase really stuck in my head- “God is in the detail”- Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.
So true.
Cut and finish
On a meta level, it can effect us far more deeply. It’s image offers a faceted creation of confidence, beauty, satisfaction, inner strength and a reflected desire. Through this, the cut can and has promoted careers, relationships and a higher sense of self worth. Through my constant training and vast experience, we can help to achieve more. The cut is everything we build from.
Colour
It can neutralise and enhance greying hair. It can define, unify and enhance a cut. A colour can also be a statement of who you are or are yet to be. Bright vivid reds, subtle golds, shimmering deep plum or a contrast of light and dark. These create a life to your hair. A celebration of you
